WINERIES IN BURGUNDY
BURGUNDY
Burgundy is a wine lover's region where the focus is on two varietals, chardonnay and pinot noir. It isn't so much the varietals that are the big story in this region, but the soil that they are grown in. This small region in the central eastern part of France has thousands of tiny vineyards scattered amongst the various crus, of which each vineyard has multiple owners. The northern most region in Burgundy is Chablis, known for its Kimmeridgian soils which are a mixture of limestone and clay but have been infused by the nutrients of shellfish fossils dating back to the Cretatious period. There are seven Grand Cru and seventeen Premier Cru.
It only gets more confusing from there heading south into the Cote d' Or. This is the heart of Burgundy and is broken into two areas: Cote de Nuits and the Cote de Beaune.
