WINES WITH FRIULANO
Tocai Friulano may no longer be known by this name, since it was the subject of a naming controversy that formally began in Europe in 1995 and became law in April, 2006. Fearing similar words for wines of various origins would confuse consumers about their country's most famous wine, "Tokaji" (a dessert-style wine made from the Furmint grape variety), Hungary took the case to the European Union and prevailed.
Sorting out and explaining these similar words, countries affected, and prior usage is appropriate at this point. The Alsacians must now label their wine produced from the Pinot Gris variety as such and no longer use "Tokay d'Alsace" or "Tokay Pinot Gris". The Australian producers of the sweet wines known as "stickies" can no longer label them "Tokay" and must substitute instead "Muscadelle", the main variety used.
The Italians, for their part, have not entirely agreed to conclusive substitute nomenclature, although many producers are leaning to the lone "Friulano".
