WINES FROM CASTELFEDER

ABOUT CASTELFEDER

Gunther Giovanett took over the family business in 1989 after his father retired from the daily operations of the winery he founded in 1970.  Located in the center of Neumarkt, in the South Tyrol region of Italy, the Giovanett family produces a range of interesting wines.

Now into their third generation, Gunther and his son Ivan are gaining a better understanding of the special micro-climates that exists in the Alto-Adige and South Tyrol regions.  With a little under 60 hectares of vineyards, 30 of which are owned by the family, Ivan is in charge of the daily vineyard management and collaborates with his father on the winemaking.

The range of wines one can produce in this region is vast.  Crisp aromatic whites like Sauvignon and Gewurztraminer to Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and Pnot Blanc.  The reds are more interesting as pure varietals because many do not make it out of the region.

Lagrein and Pinot Nero are wonderful examples of terroir-based reds that offer complexity and elegant tannin structure.  Schiava, on the other hand, is a great wine to enjoy in the spring or summer.  It is light skinned and fruity with a focused spice element and medium tannin.
